Memorial Day in the United States

Memorial Day in the United States

One of the few holidays observed in the United States, Memorial Day remembers the country’s armed forces who died while on line of duty. It is celebrated every last Monday of May, and for this year, Memorial Day is on May 25th.

Not to be mistaken as Veteran’s Day, Memorial Day is solely for those who died while serving the armed forces. This occasion first started after the American Civil War and it was then called Decoration Day. Remembering fallen heroes of various American armed forces fighting from World War II, the Vietnam War, and the Korean War to recent campaigns in Afghanistan and in the Middle East.

Observing Memorial Day

Across all cities and states, various activities are held to honor those who sacrificed their lives in the name of freedom and peace. Parades, patriotic concerts, motorcycle rallies and other services simultaneously happen in the United States.

The US flag flies half-staff until noon. Flags are also placed in unknown tombs and memorials. Some also fly special POW/MIA flags. On the other hand, the government invites everyone to join the National Moment of Remembrance– at 3pm, reflect and ponder on the real meaning of the holiday; think of all your loved ones, friends, ancestors and neighbors who sacrificed their lives.

Many visit cemeteries to honor their loved ones who died for their country. Some visit the Tomb of the Unknown, at Arlington National Cemetery, to give homage.
